DESPINA steals the show in the new Così fan tutte at the Royal Opera House. Spanish soprano Sabina Puértolas injects bucket-loads of fun into the flighty maid in the Mozart/Da Ponte comedy of manners.

Indeed, the piece springs to life whenever she’s on stage, proffering advice on matters of love to her two jejune employers, whether it be in a cocktail bar or the Garden of Eden.

Unfortunately, a certain blandness creeps in when she’s off-stage and the pantomime tap is turned off. Although the singing is terrific, there’s an all-round loss of momentum.

The new staging by German director Jan Philipp Gloger is updated to today’s social media generation. Originally members of the aristocracy, the two young women Fiordiligi and Dorabella are in M&S-style clothes while their fiancés Guglielmo and Ferrando are in work-out trousers and loose white shirts. But there’s not much panto-camping when the men return dressed as turban-topped Albanians.

Russian conductor Semyon Bychkov delivers an immaculate reading of the glorious Mozart score.
