Delightful last coupling at Grimeborn

PUCCINI'S Gianni Schicchi and Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci made a delightful coupling among the last offerings of this year’s Grimeborn Festival at the Arcola Theatre, Dalston.

Some of the richness of the orchestral scores was lost through piano accompaniment.

But the singers made up for this by their competent portrayal of the complex characters in both productions and the Arcola’s intimate venue allowed the audience to follow their emotions very closely.

Ian Henderson sang the loveable rogue Gianni Schicchi who connives with his daughter’s prospective in-laws to rewrite the will of their wealthy relative.

Herbie Hill Reid stood out as the lawyer in Gianni and the lover in Pagliacci.
