AN intriguing concert that should delight Bach enthusiasts is being given by the crack Bach Players at St John’s Downshire, Hampstead, on Saturday evening. The concert “Bach and before” features music composed by three of Bach predecessors in the post of Kantor at the Thomasschule in Leipzig – Schein, Schelle and Kuhan.

Their treatments of familiar texts are being played at the concert, demonstrating the extraordinary strength and beauty of German church music of those times.

Being played after the interval is the first cantata written by Bach after his Leipzig appointment. This large work Die Elenden sollen essen is in two parts, the second including virtuosic trumpet scoring.

Playing the trumpet is world-renowned Adrian Woodward (pictured), as much at home with the baroque trumpet as with its modern descendants.
