HAILING originally from Belgium, the Smurfs TV show ran for the best part of 20 years and featured our little blue chums doing what they could to bring peace and harmony to a world constantly threatened by the ill-intentioned baddie Gargomel.

In this second instalment in the film franchise, Gargomel is still up to no good – though this time the action is in Paris.

The charm of these little pixies has been drained by the film franchise, which includes the irritation of having random words replaced with ”Smurf”. While this film is far from sophisticated, and lacks the script and plot of contemporary kids’ films from the likes of Pixar, it won’t disappoint the very young who it is aimed at.

MY FATHER AND THE MAN IN BLACK
Directed by Jonathan Holiff
Certificate: 15

We have had documentaries and biopics about the life of Johny Cash, the gravel-voiced icon of American pop culture.

In this film we learn his fame was in no small measure helped along by the work of his fantastically good manager and promoter, Saul Holiff. But Saul was an unhappy person and took his own life in 2005.

This film, directed by Saul’s son Jonathan, is a personal search to find out what happened to his father, while piecing together his role in the life and career of one of the 20th century’s biggest musical stars.

Jonathan walks a tricky line between attempts to chronicle the manager and singer’s lives and then coming to terms with his dad’s sudden and unexpected death.
